Newscopy: "TORII GATE, JAPANESE TEA GARDEN, GOLDEN GATE PARK--After a protest by 14 members who met early in the morning at the gate to protest its painting, the Society for Preservation of Golden Gate Park brought from San Jose one of the original Japanese carpenters who built the gate in 1913 to ask his advice concerning its proper repair. After inspecting the gate, Mr. Fumiji Harasawa said it was in good condition except for rotting of the box ridge at the top and some of the shingles. The California Redwood Association has offered to supply the material needed without cost and has also suggested the replacement of the box beam with a solid timber so that future rotting will be avoided."
