Newscopy: "CHURCH OF THE WEEK--Calvary Presbyterian Church, Fillmore and Jackson-sts, was formally organized July, 1854, only eight years after the Bear Flag revolt and the introduction of Protestant worship into California. This past week and tomorrow, centennial services will herald the completion of 100 years of service to San Francisco. Dr. Ward Willis Long is only the eighth minister to occupy Calvary's pulpit during the 100 years. The late Dr. Ezra Allen Van Nuys served from 1922 to 1947. His ministry was the longest and he succeeded Dr. Josiah Sibley, now a resident of Southern California, who is attending the celebration. The first church was located on Bush-st where the Mills Building now stands. The present building was occupied in 1902, withstood the fire and earthquake, and has been beautified and modernized to become one of San Francisco's most outstanding church edifices. Many balcony supports and pews from the early church building are still in use."
