Newscopy: "SAN FRANCISCO IN 1854--Here is a picture which is indicative of the conditions in the residential district of this city as they were in the beginning. The picture was made in 1854 and shows the home of Joseph F. Atwell, at the corner of Powell and Clay streets. The house was built in 1852, two years before the picture was made. We are indebted to S. I. Kellogg of Oakland for this view. Below is a photo showing the same corner as it is today, taken yesterday by an Illustrated Daily Herald photographer." .
