Newscopy: "First Western Pharmacy Was Founded in 1912--The first Chinese pharmacy in town was organized in November, 1912, by Man Quong Fong, then a student in the UC College of Pharmacy. Till then no Chinese had ventured operating a Western pharmacy in Chinatown, for herb teas were the prevalent remedies and there were no Chinese practicing Western medicine. Indeed, Fong's Republic Drug Co. on Grant ave. was the first Chinese pharmacy in the U. S. A classmate, Milton B. Duffy, now chief of the State Pure Food and Drug Division, was the store's pharmacist for several years. As years rolled by, physicians like the late Margaret Chung, James H. Hall, Rose G. Wong and C.Y. Low started to practice in Chinatown. Today more than 40 physicians and eight pharmacies are serving the Chinese community.
