On back: "WATERFRONT LOOKOUT STATION - SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. - Marine Exchange lookout station at foot of San Francisco's famed Hyde street station, from which scanners spot all incoming ships. Station is descendent of Merchant Exchange Service, started in 1865, a network which withstood stormy competition near turn of the century, and a newspaper ship reporting service which were consolidated in 1923. During colorful early days, ship reporting stations were located atop hills and at points along coast which dispatched fast horses to announce a ship's arrival to the city.".
