Lower photo of the old Gantner & Mattern building at First and Mission-sts shows the rapidity with which buildings are being demolished for the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge terminal and viaducts. A giant crane, shown in upper photo, was hoisted on to the sixth floor, eats its way steadily through the building. It weighs nine tons, exerts a force of 10,000 pounds and lowers itself from floor to floor by means of a ramp."
