Newscopy: "RESULT OF RUNNING WILD--A car on the famous 'Hyde-st Grip' ended up like this last night. It had traveled from the end of the line at the foot of Hyde-st up the hill as far as Lombard-st when a stalled auto forced it to stop in the middle of a block where it lost its cable-hold. It started to roll back and the gripman, E. J. Howard, tried to regain the 'rope.' He didn't make it and he and the conductor, E. C. Steffen, thereupon jumped from the rapidly accelerating car. It was said to have been traveling 50 miles an hour when it reached the end of the line, leaped the track, ran another block, sheared off a telephone pole and nestled up against the South End Rowing Club, as you can see. There were no passengers."
