On back: "ASSOCIATED PRESS PHOTO FROM SAN FRANCISCO. CAUTION: USE CREDIT. EASIER GOING FOR BLIND VETERAN - J. D. Hayes, of El Centro, Calif., is guided past a cable car at Van Ness Avenue and California in San Francisco by his specially trained dog, Diane, 16-months-old German shepherd. Hayes lost an arm, a leg and his sight when a mine exploded during the Battle of the Bulge in 1945. The heaviness of an artificial leg caused Hayes to walk in a circle. He was trained with Diane at Guide Dogs for the Blind, Inc., of San Rafael, Calif., where the dog went through a different routine than with most sightless persons. Diane had to walk at a slower pace and to guide Hayes in a straight line by budging him when he circled.".
