Newscopy: "News-Call Bulletin Columnist Arthur Caylor's campaign to restore Muni rear route numbers paid off today. Bids will be opened at 3 p.m. March 24 for supplying newly designed vandal-and-theft-proof identifying numbers to be placed in the back window of each of the Muni's 800 trolley coaches and buses. They were designed by Victor Peterson, Muni superintendent of equipment, and selected by the city Public Utilities Commission from half a dozen samples. PETERSON said his department estimated the cost at $12,500 and will bid on the job."
Text continues: "Installation is planned a month after bids are received. The numbers will be 4 by 2 inches in size, and transparent so light can shine through them with a high degree of visibility. Their use was abandoned more than a year ago after theft and vandalism required replacement of 6000 to 7000 yearly. The removable numbers were turned in by drivers at the end of a run but at times were forgotten or missing. SOMETIMES they were turned upside down by youngsters."
