Newscopy: "LIKE OPENING UP FLOOD GATES--This is one of the traffic jams which developed on Treasure Island yesterday as some 6,280 cars, buses, and station wagons descended on the Navy installations, opened to the public for the first time since Pearl Harbor. The island's four parking lots were quickly filled. Roads then became jammed and traffic backed up on the Bay Bridge to Seventeenth and Mariposa streets in San Francisco and the Eastshore Highway in the East Bay. Some 66,000 visited the island."
