Newscopy: "THIS IS FRONT STREET--The point shown in the upper picture is between Sacramento and California streets, looking south. This was apparently in the midst of the commission merchant business of the city as it was then. The photograph was taken about thirty years ago and is from the collection of Louis Adler, through whose courtesy it is reproduced here. Below is a picture of the same location showing the street and buildings as they appear today, photographed by an Illustrated Daily Hearld photographer."
