On back: "SAN FRANCISCO-OAKLAND BAY BRIDGE; Walter G. Swanson; 500 Sansome St. - GA rfield 1415. File 900.11 B-12/AA. Yesterday (April 4) a reel barge of the Columbia Steel Company chugged eastward from Tower W-2, laying messenger cable in the bay out to Tower W-3. This messenger line was raised to the tops of the two towers, and on Tower W-2 at the west end was attached to a length of 2-1/4 inch catwalk rope, four of which will support each of the two 10-foot wide walk ways over the tops of the towers. A winch at the base of Tower W-3 wound up the messenger line, drawing lengths of the heavier catwalk rope across the 2310 feet between Tower W-2 and Tower W-3...".
On back (continued): "The rope being snaked across between these two 474 and 519-foot towers was kept sufficiently taut at all times so that the catwalk rope would not be dropped into the water of the bay where the galvanizing on the rope might be damaged. Care was exercised in the laying of these catwalk ropes because, according to Chief Engineer C. H. Purcell, they are later to be cut up and used as suspender ropes which will hang from the suspension cable and support the trusses which comprise the bridge decks.".
