A thing of beauty is the great San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, the world's largest bridge. This aerial view, looking toward the Berkeley hills, shows the two-mile twin suspension bridges of the West Bay Crossing in the foreground, while in the background is seen the 1400-foot cantilever span of the East Bay Crossing stretching toward the Oakland shore. This great bridge, which is being built under the jurisdiction of the State Department of Public Works, of which Earl Lee Kelly is Director; for the California Toll Bridge Authority of which Governor Frank F. Merriam is Chairman, is now 85% complete, exclusive of rails. According to Chief Engineer C. H. Purcell, the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge will be open to automobile traffic early in November.".
