Newscopy: "A SWITCH--This time the road is on the truck. Clark-Farnsworth Cartage delivers a 25-ton load of prefabricated concrete beams which Independent Iron Works' riggers install as a new roadway during the conversion of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Each set of four 30-foot beams fills one section from which interurban train tracks have been removed. Riggers use an overhead traveling crane to swing each beam into place. These are pre-cast to fit across bare girders, a modern technique that eliminates building of forms and pouring on the job site. As each set of beams is grouted, installation equipment and riggers move ahead to the next open section."
