Printed on back of duplicate: "WEST BAY CROSSING SUBSTRUCTURE NEARS COMPLETION--These stepping stones to carry the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge between San Francisco and Yerba Buena Island constitute the most difficult underwater construction work ever undertaken. This deep water and deep rock pier construction is now beyond the danger stage, according to Chief Engineer C.H. Purcell. beginning with the tower on the skyline, the photo shows Tower W-2, Pier W-3, Pier W-4, Pier W-5, and completed Pier W-6 in the immediate foreground. Pier W-6 was sunk through the deepest water encountered in the bay, 107 feet, and rests on rock at an average depth of 180 feet. Pier W-5, shallowest, rests on rock at an average depth of 110 feet in 68 feet of water. Pier W-4, the huge concrete center anchorage, rests on rock at an average depth of 210 feet in 70 feet of water. Pier W-3 is built on rock at 237 feet below water, which is 70 feet deep...".
