On back: "A year and 6 mos. old, the 8-1/4 mile San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge today ranks third among the eight leading toll crossings in the United States in amount of traffic carried, according to recent traffic figures. This latest photograph shows the upper deck of the suspension spans (West Bay Crossing) looking toward the West Portal of the Yerba Buena Island Tunnel, on an ordinary week day. Opened on November 12, 1936, 13,797,331 vehicles had crossed its two deck roadways by June 1, 1938. Built at an estimated cost of $77,200,000 (with completion of interurban facilities) statistics reveal that the giant structure, longest in the world over navigable water, has stimulated motorized communication 100% between San Francisco and East Bay Cities and the region beyond. The publicly-owned bridge was built by the State of California and is operated as a district of the State Division of Highways, headed by C. H. Purcell, its Chief Engineer."
