On back: "U.S. Attorney General Cummings visits Alcatraz Island - Alcatraz Island... United States Attorney General Homer S. Cummings today made an official inspection of Alcatraz Island, site of the new federal prison for incorrigibles, located in San Francisco Bay. He was taken through the rehabilitated former army prison by James A. Johnston, first warden of 'the devil's island of America.' The warden showed Cummings the new cell blocks with their tamper-proof locking system, the administration buildings and other units of the island. Accompanying the Attorney General were a score of government officials and local dignitaries. Cummings complimented Johnston on the work that has been done in making the prison over, declaring that it was the 'pet' project of the government's penal system. Above, left to right, inspecting cells are: Mayor Angelo Rossi of San Francisco, Attorney General Cummings, Warden Johnston and Chief of Police Quinn of San Francisco. 8-18-34. All bureaus.".
