Newscopy: "Five years ago today the rhythmic beat of coin presses that had produced hard money in San Francisco for over a century was stilled. Expensive transportation of the coins from the local U. S. mint to the East was given as the main reason for closing down. When the last pennies and dimes were minted here, March 24, 1955, the U. S. Treasury Dept. indicated the machinery was mothballed against the day when it might be needed again. However, shortly afterwards the machines were dismantled and unobtrusively shipped to Denver. Of the 150 employes who worked at the mint five years ago, only 33 are still on the job, most of them guards...".
