Folder: S.F. Colleges-St. Ignatius.
On back of duplicate photo: "Old St. Ignatius College, now the University of San Francisco, as it looked in the 1860s. Standing on the present site of the Emporium at Fourth and Market Streets, the college was considered by some San Franciscans too far from town to be of much service as an urban college. Ten years before Edison invented the incandescent globe, scientists in this building perfected an electric lighting system which illuminated Market Street on the occasion of any big civic celebration.
