Newscopy: "Residents and businessmen along Irving st. thought they might be witnessing a crime or a TV enactment of one in the 600 block this morning. Police descended in force in response to an anonymous call at 8:15 that a man had killed his wife and barricaded himself in a hobby shop at 646 Irving, threatening to shoot any who came near. Getting no response to shouts from the sidewalk, Sgt. Sidney Olson threw a newspaper rack through the glass front door, after which Patrolman Frank Gannon fired two tear gas shells into the place. Subsequent search of the store revealed no trace of anyone. Police then raced to the home of the shop owner, Albert Beckman, at 1311 12th ave. They found him and his wife very much alive, and mystified about the commotion. They said, however, they had been receiving daily harassing phone calls since they acquired the shop a year ago. Police were trying to locate the driver of a cab which reportedly picked up a fare at the store shortly before the hoax call was made."
