In a 44-foot home built ketch, Capt. and Mrs William Tiemeyer, with a crew of four, sailed out of Avalon, Santa Catalina Island for Honolulu. Without engine and only sails for motive power the intrepid islanders expect to reach the Hawaiian Islands in 23 days. Their ketch known as the "Alga", took Tiemeyer five years to build, and no machinery was used in the construction. The Tiemeyers are carrying provisions for 30 days for six persons. Accompanying the party as crew are N.A. Woodbury, Don Hall, Bobby von Byrne, and Charles Kern."
