Newscopy: "RADAR ANTENNA - This is the rotating antenna ("Whirling eye") of the radar installation mounted on top of the wheel house of the Southern Pacific ferryboat, the Sacramento. The rotating antenna is analagous [sic] to a rotating searchlight in that it sends out radio beams to locate obstacles in the ship's path. Note San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in the background, with perplexed sea gulls wondering what this radar is all about. The antenna is one of two main parts of the General Electric's new 'electronic navigator' - a commercial radar device designed for maritime service. The General Electric 'electric navigator' has been installed on the Sacramento for trial and demonstration through the courtesy of the Southern Pacific in order that the Bay Area marine trade may observe the operation and benefits of radar."
