Newscopy: "AND WHOSE guardian spirit are you?" policeman Don Murphy asks this totem pole haled into Central Station yesterday. It was found by prowl car lying on sidewalk atop Russian Hill and "identified" today. Things are quiet on Russian Hill. Sure, you might get a misplaced poodle, or somebody locked out of their apartment, or a car blocking a driveway. But otherwise things are quiet, so police officers Frank McFarland and Norbert Currie cruised along Leavenworth St yesterday, just listening to the radio calls. Idling along, past the apartment house at 2423 Leavenworth, McFarland did a double take, brought the squad car to a jolting halt. Supine on the pavement was somebody's totem pole. The totem pole wouldn't say how he got there, so a careful check of the neighborhood was begun."
