Newscopy: "FOUGHT OVER CHINCHILLAS--Mrs. John O'Malley is held at city prison for fatally shooting her husband. Mrs. Carolyn O'Malley, who has four young children and 10 chinchillas, was in jail today for killing her husband during a bitter argument over how to raise the chinchillas. The victim, John T. O'Malley Jr., 35, was a California Highway patrolman on the Golden Gate Bridge. His 34-year-old widow told Inspector Al Nelder 'I just kept shooting,' using O'Malley's own gun, and she hit him three times, in the head, chest and right arm. She's booked for suspicion of murder. On the Cellar Steps--The killing took place on the cellar steps of the O'Malley home at 1826 22nd-av. Their four daughters, aged 11, 9, 8 and 3, were upstairs at the time. As Mrs. O'Malley briefly explained the death of her husband to Nelder, it was the result of a long argument over the chinchillas they were raising in the basement. The central point of the fight came, she said, when he accused her of putting in the same cage two chinchillas which always claw each other. Threat Repeated--Mrs. O'Malley said her husband shouted 'I'll kill you!' at her during the argument, which started in the afternoon. Then he left for a part time job he has at the Union Square Garage. When he returned last night, about 8 p.m., the argument began again, and she went upstairs, got the gun, came down and shot him. Then Mrs. O'Malley wandered outside, and told a neighbor, Mrs. Marie Turkleson, 1822 22nd-av, what had happened. Mrs. Turkelson called police and the victim's father, who lives at 1410 22nd-av."
