Newscopy: "A peaceful, yet emotional demonstration against Soviet barbarism in Hungary was staged by some 200 Bay Area students in front of City Hall yesterday afternoon. Showing their solidarity with the struggling nation by carrying Hungarian flags and carrying anti-Soviet banners, the students widly applauded three main speakers. Assamblyman Edward Gaffney recalled how the Hungarians halted the Turkish conquest five hundred years ago and compared their heroic battle of 1456 with the present revolt against their Russian rulers. Jan Sallo, United Hungarian Relief Committee chairman, drew a vivid picture of how his countrymen battle armored cars and tanks with little more than their bare hands. Jerry Harrison of the USF urged the students to bombard their congressmen and the UN with letters demanding immediate help for the Hungarian people. 'In Paris they stormed the Soviet embassy, he said. We want to do something more constructive. We want to help in an effective way-at once."
