Folder: S.F. Protests and Picketing-1964-Sheraton Palace Hotel.
Newscopy: "United States diplomacy scored again Friday night. But just what the score was no one knew -least of all 10 visiting officials of new African nations. They walked smack into the middle of the racial demonstration in the Sheraton-Palace Hotel. They were bewildered. A girl demonstrator ran up to them screaming that they must not cross the picket line and register at the hotel. They stared at her blankly and went in and finally made their way upstairs in a freight elevator. The group includes officials of Dahomey, the Cameroons, Tanganyika, and the Malagasy Republic. They are on a tour of the U.S. as guests of the State Department. A.E. Laurencelle, their State Department host, said: 'They are very puzzled and bewildered by all this. I will have to explain it to them later.' Three delegates fron Tanganyka ventured through the riotous crowd this morning for breakfast in the Garden Court. 'Well,' one observed, 'as long as it's a peaceful demonstration, we can't see anything wrong. But we certainly would object if there were any violence.' A bellboy gestures to African guests to follow him, but they can't get through."
