Folder: Line Drawings-S.F. Vigilantes
Newscopy: "HANGINGS in downtown San Francisco were a frequent sight when California was a new-born state. The sketch above shows the gallows on which the second Vigilance Committee carried out its last execution -- a double hanging July 29, 1856, in the center of Davis-st, near Sacramento-st. The men executed were Joseph Heatheringon, who shot and killeda doctor, and a man listed only as Brace, habitual criminal and kiler. Heatherington attempted to deliver a speech from the scaffold, only to be interrupted by Brace, who screamed blasphemously until the trap under the pair's feet was sprung."
Written on back: "Execution of Heatherington and Brace."
