Folder: S.F. Freeways-Proposed Drawings.
Newscopy: "A choice of three proposed routes linking the James Lick Freeway with the Embarcadero Skyway faced city officials today. The 3.3-mile to 3.6-mile proposals were unveiled yesterday by the state Division of Highways. They are the second and final segment of the connection from Evans ave. to Howard st. The initial portion of the route to be known as the Southern Freeway already has been approved to Evans ave. The suggested routes: -A 'P' Line that generally parallels Pennsylvania st. and requires a half-a-block width of adjacent Iowa st. It is primarily a single levelplan with 'very good alignments and acceptable gradients.' This plan of 3.3 miles would cost $52.6 million, of which $12.7 million would be for right-of-way acquisition. It would require purchase of 64 improved parcels. -An 'L' Line that generally parallels Illinois st. through the middle project rea and is primarily a double-deck structure. This would cost $52 million, with $12.9 for right-of-way purchase that would include 69 parcels of industrial and commercial property. -A 'T' Line generally following Tennessee st. and requiring a complete block width between Tennessee and Third sts. and between 25th and 19th sts. Cost would be $53.4 million, including purchase of 112 parcels of improved land for $14.7 million. Dist. Highway Engineer Joseph Sinclair said it would require between four and eight months to obtain approval and another one or two years of planning and engineering before construction could begin. The plans met with praise from Sup. William C. Blake, who urged that hearing dates be set immediately, and from G. Louis Fox, general manager of the Chamber of Commerce. The Lick Freeway now has a daily traffic volume of 132,000 and can expect an increase to about 225,000 vehicles daily if the extension is not built, he said. But if the 'P' Line is built, that will take some 80,000 vehicles from the Lick route, and if the 'L' or 'T' Line is selected and estimated 72,000 will use it instead of Lick, he predicted."
