Folder: S.F. Streets-California-1940's.
Newscopy: "SNOW seemed to have fallen on California-st today but it was just a demonstration of a new street cleaning technique. While a few city and Chamber of Commerce officials and scores of pedestrians looked on, a 1500-gallon city street-flushing truck washed down the street between Kearny and Montgomery-sts with ordinary water. Then it made another run with a soapless detergent, D-40, in the tank, leaving the snow-like coat at left. Street sweepers, right, moved in and old accumulations of scum and oil vanished from the brick surface for the first time in years. Next the street was flushed clean by the tank truck with clean water. Samples of the chemical solution were taken at the curb for analysis. The demonstration was sponsored by the city in conjunction with Oronite and the California Research Corp."
