Newscopy: "THIS OLD HOUSE at 600 Cambridge st. is reminiscent of days gone by at University Mound. In the background are new houses mushrooming on the 'mound,' replacing the rows of greenhouses. Although some flower-growers are still in business in the area, most have moved. On the 'mound' once stood Methodist College, later bought by James Lick for an old women's home. Many of the streets are named for famous universities, Harvard, Oxford, Yale, Amherst, Princeton, Dartmouth. Oldtimers at City Hall will tell you that for years this was one of the lushest potential residential areas in San Francisco, ideal for raising flowers and children. The flower growers happened to cash in first. But during the 20's, those wanting to rear families got interested in the rolling terrain, the climate, and the convenience of this land. Year by year, the offers got so attractive, that one after another, the nursery owner gave in. There are still some greenhouses, and some vacant lots, but they're going pretty fast..."
