Folder: S.F. Streets-Greenwich.
Newscopy: "Tucked away in the northeast corner of San Francisco is the world's crookedest street, a one-block-long segment of Lombard-st that meanders crazily up the hill from Leavenworth to Hyde-st, shadowed by balconied apartments on the crest of the hill. The News' Big Eye, from a spot on Telegraph Hill, contrasts the snake-like course of Lombard with the abrupt climb of Greenwich-st, a block to the left. Lombard's grade is 18.2 percent for the one block, and Greenwich's so much steeper that the city's builders gave up hopes of building a street there, and simply landscaped the entire block. Motorists descending Lombard must make eight sharp turns to reach the bottom."
