The Marjorie G. and Carl W. Stern Book Arts & Special Collections Center houses important research collections on printing history, calligraphy and lettering, wit and humor, little magazines and zines, early children’s books and several smaller collections. Some materials have not been fully catalogued: patrons are encouraged to consult with librarians about their research needs. The Center also sponsors a variety of exhibitions and programs on a regular basis.

The Branch Archives Collection is a digitized collection of photographs, documents, and ephemera created and kept by individual SFPL branch libraries in the course of their everyday activities. Arrangement is by branch, with items sometimes titled by date digitized rather than by content. Materials reflect the branches' reference desk topics, operational work, neighborhood history, and community events. Additional Branch Library files may be found in the archival collection of San Francisco Public Library Records, located in the San Francisco History Center on the 6th floor of the Main Library.

The San Francisco Historical Photograph Collection contains photographs and works on papers of San Francisco and California scenes ranging from 1850 to the present. This collection includes views of San Francisco street scenes, buildings, and neighborhoods, as well as photographs of famous San Francisco personalities. The collection consists mostly of the photo morgue of the San Francisco News-Call Bulletin, a daily newspaper, ranging from 1920s to 1965. The collection also contains albums, slides, postcards, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and lantern slides of San Francisco and California subjects.
