Further, the composition of these foreign-born whites was as

In other words, the percentage of illiteracy among the for-
eign-born whites in California is higher by 1.4 per cent as com-
pared with that among the Japanese immigrants. Note also the
composition of these foreign-born whites. By far the great ma-
jority are those from the leading nations of Europe. Yet the
percentage of illiteracy among them is high. One of the favorite
arguments of anti-Japanese agitators such as “ignorant Jap
coolies” has evidently no meaning in the light of the above facts.
So much for the facts relating to Japanese immigrants upon their
arrival in this country.
