Caption: "The C.P. Ferry Boat 'Solano' discharging at the Port Costa Slip. 3800. Watkins New Cabinet Series. Yosemite and Pacific Coast, 427 Montgomery St., San Francisco. For description, see the other side".
Written on back: "Ferry slip at Port Costa as it appeared in December, 1879, when the first passenger trains to operate over the newly completed line between Oakland and Sacramento were ferried across Carquinez Straits on the steamer 'Solano'. This boat was then the largest ferry in the world and held that distinction until 1914 when the 'Contra Costa' was placed in service by Southern Pacific, at which time additional slips were also built at Port Costa and Benicia. Railroad equipment has changed considerable in fifty years and the tiny locomotives with their odd shaped smoke stacks have long since gone out of style. Both the 'Solano' and the 'Contra Costa' will be dismantled when the new Martinez-Benicia railroad bridge is opened for traffic November 1. April 13, 1938."
