Newscopy: "Note (extreme left, center) further berthing facilities now under construction for inactive fleet. Several other expansion projects in the yard are also under way. The extent of the yard in 1941 is shown in picture (right) when the establishment consisted of 48 acres of land, two docks and a few sheds. It was originally started in 1868 by William Ralston, San Francisco financier."
