Text from negative sleeve: "The Spanish-American War starting up, Company M of the 51st Iowa Volunteers, I think, made up of Red Oak, Iowa boys who had been school mates and neighbors of mine, came to San Francisco en route to Manila, P. I. I got a vacation and went up and staid [sic] there several days, visiting and taking a lot of pictures. Jesse Clark (called "Tick.") was in my room at High School, altho a class ahead of me. He was Captain of Company M. Here he is by his tent. The furnishings had all been brot [sic] out to air.”
