Donor description: Anna and her 5th grade graduation class. Commencement was hosted in the courtyard of the Filipino Educational Center, now Bessie Carmichael. Anna was valedictorian of her graduating class, 5th grade about 12 yrs old.
Anna's mother is Filipino, her father is white. People would think that Anna's mother was her babysitter; she dealt with racism by responding in Spanish or Chinese; often Chinese. Anna didn't speak English at school, she attended James Desmond by City College and near Balboa High School, where she also attended. She had to take ESL classes. Father was a naval officer and mother worked on the base, it was considered "marrying down" to marry a Filipino woman. Her father's side of the family completely rejected their family after the marriage; they'd even send them photos, but they'd always be mailed back to them.
