Newscopy: "COMING DOWN--Workmen start removing the balcony and iron grill work surrounding the top floor of the Palace Hotel today. The massive structure from which scores of the world's royalty and dignitaries - including several Presidents of the United States - have surveyed San Francisco's seven hills, is no longer safe, engineers said. It is cheaper to remove it than to repair it, the management said. The balcony was 35 years old, the present brick and terra cotta building having been built in 1909 on the site of the original Palace destroyed by the great fire three years before. Iron grill work and balcony will be donated to the scrap metal drive."
