Newscopy: "Coast Guardsmen at the ocean beach station talk over orders to close down the post Nov. 1. Left to right are Jerry Springman of Piedmont, Boyd Dresser of San Francisco, Loren Waller of Colton, and Ron Kent of Hollywood. With them are two neighborhood dogs who list the station high on their popularity lists."
Newscopy: "A landmark of San Francisco since 1877, the Coast Guard Golden Gate Lifeboat Station at Great Highway and Fulton-st on the ocean beach will be closed Nov. 1. Coast Guard officials in Washington announced the decision because, as they explained, 'the station is not performing Coast Guard duties primarily and personnel is needed elsewhere.' The crew of 10 which mans the one-acre post and lives in its four white buildings said the news was expected. Chief Boatswain Fred Hanson, commander of the station since January, admitted he had hoped for a couple of years' duty at No. 3746.5 but wouldn't comment on his superior's action. Aerial Marker - He explained the designation as the latitude and pointed out a large 309 painted on a 20-foot wooden platform as an aerial marker."
