A civic celebration to mark the mid-point in construction for the 650,000-square-foot underground convention center was held at the site on Thursday, Oct. 16. When finished in late 1981, the facility will contain the world's largest column-free exhibition hall, with 16 massive 275-foot arches, some pictured in foreground, under construction. Additionally, the structure will have 31 meeting rooms and kitchen facilities to serve up to 6,000 people. The square-block convention facility is located in San Francisco's downtown South of Market area, bounded by Third and Fourth, between Howard and Folsom Streets."
