Folder: S.F. Ships-USS San Francisco (See also: Monuments)
Written on accompanying paper: "END OF THE LONG CRUISE -- The heavy cruiser USS San Francisco is towed to the dock at Philadelphia Navel Base after "mothballing" procedures that enclosed her guns, fire directors and other topside flighting equipment in airtight cocoons to protect them from weather during the time the ship was to be held in idle storage. The crowd at dockside includes base personnel and some present and former members of her crew through the years of World War II action in the Pacific. Not the identifying number on the starboard bow just below the anchor; USS San Francisco was CA38 in Navy identification. This photo probably made in late 1946 or early 1947, date could be supplied by the Navy's Bureau of Ships, and probably is available in the news library files of the Chronicle and the Examiner. Ship was scrapped about two years later, never sailed again under her own power. CAWelsh 3/21/83."
