Folder: S.F. Ships-Ferryboats-Richmond/San Rafael Printed on back: "Redwood Empire Association News Bureau, 85 Post Street, San Francisco 4, Calif. (Redwood Empire Association Photo). NEW BRIDGE TO EMPIRE -- A segment of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge which links transcontinental and coastal routes on the eastern side of the San Francisco Bay to the Redwood Empire of Northwestern California and Southwestern Oregon. Ferry boats, which had been operating between San Rafael and Richmond since 1915, creased to run after the $68,000,000 bridge opened on Sept.1. The bridge measures four miles from shore to shore. The top deck will handle two-way traffic pending completion of the lower deck in 1957. Then each deck will be used for one-way travel. A few miles farther west the Golden Gate Bridge, which gave the fresh impetus to the sensational development of the Redwood Empire when the span was completed in 1937."
