Note
Newscopy: HARCOURT, BRACE & COMPANY, INC. JOSE R. CAPABLANCA. Learning to play chess at the age of four; triumph after triumph, each more important than the one before; and chess champion of the world at thirty-three--such is the career of Capablanca. Capablanca was born in Havana in 1888. Through his childhood, his playthings were chess men and a chess board, and at twelve he was the champion of Cuba. In 1904 he came to the United States to complete his education, first at a preparatory school and then at Columbia. In 1907 and 1908, he was in collegiate contests, winning the inter-collegiate championship for Columbia from Harvard, Yale and Princeton; and figuring in the American collegiate cable team in the match against Oxford and Cambridge for the I. L. Rice international trophy. Shortly after this, he determined upon a professional chess career. His defeating, in 1909, F. J. Marshall, the United States Champion and most representative international player, at once brought him into the limelight; the beginning of his international career came two years later when he won first place over Rubinstein and Vidmar in the San Sebastian match in Spain. At that time, there was an attempt to bring him and Dr. Lasker together, which came to nothing. Capablanca then made a tour of South America.
